Industry 4.0 and IoT is now a cost effective solution for all types of industries. But these words are very vague and misleading ... what do they really mean ? What benefit do they bring to you and your industry ?

All the large players such as Siemsn, GE, ABB, etc. have tried to answer this question in their own way. Most focus on how to securely transfer your data from your machinery to the cloud where you can then apply deep analytics and access this information anywhere in the world.

  2. The mass storage of that data (at your factory or in the cloud)

SENSORS

There are many types of cost effective industrial sensors available these days which can monitor everything from temperature, vibration, accelerometer, visual, light, sound, etc. Thousands of sensors either in a combination or individually.

These sensors are also being made more flexible where you can have them with bluetooth communications, wifi communications, battery operated, or direct cable networked with POE. All this allows for standard technologies which can speed up installation of the devices while being very cost effective compared to traditional solutions.

DATA STORAGE

Everyone talks about the cloud. In fact Siemens and GE have based most of their billions of dollars of research in developing their cloud solutions. This is good. But it means you need to be connected to the Internet and you have to trust where your valuable factory data is going.

We have decided to work not only with the big players but also work with partners who focus also on local data and analytic management at your factory in an offline mode. This means you can keep your data local, off-line (or in a local network only) and in your hands in an open source format that you can convert to any other format you want in the future.

DATA ANALYTICS AND USER INTERFACE

This is a fast developing area which really depends on what you want to achieve. Some common end solutions are;

  1. Real-time monitoring and alarms anywhere in the world
  2. Predictive monitoring to estimate failure time and/or automated planned maintenance schedules
  3. Solve difficult problems with creative sensors and analytics
  4. Expand your knowledge of the operations and machinery through large arrays of sensors at critical locations (in addition to your standard sensors for automation).
